School Meals 2&3 Sept

School Meals - Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd Sept

The school’s redeveloped canteen will be re-opening next week. The following arrangements will therefore apply this week:

Boys who are coming in to school on Thursday 2nd September (Years 7 and 12), will still be able to buy pasta, wraps, sandwiches and similar items. PAYMENT WILL BE BY CASH ONLY.

On Friday 3rd, when the whole school is due back, we ask boys if possible to bring a packed lunch. Boys will be able to buy a limited range of sandwiches and fruit in school (CASH ONLY), but will probably find it more satisfactory to bring their own food.

The canteen should be re-opening on Monday 6th September, with the cashless payment system in operation.

Academy Status

Dear Parents,

I wanted to write to tell you the good news that both the Boys and the Girls Schools will be in the first wave of “Outstanding” schools to become Academies on September 1st.

A great deal of hard work has gone in over the holiday to ensure the best possible deal for the Schools and we are all very happy with the results. The Schools will be unchanged as far as the students are concerned, but will be in a position of greater autonomy, and therefore security, as we move into the future. As we celebrate another year of excellent results from students at both schools, I’m happy that we have put ourselves in the best possible position for further success in the coming years.

One chapter of the Schools’ history has come to a sad end this holiday with the passing of Neil Hart, a much loved and highly respected former Headmaster of WBGS. Neil would, I’m sure have been delighted to see the Schools’ moving forward and opening this new chapter which will help to ensure that the history will continue into the future.

Berlin Trip

Sixth Form Study Visit to Berlin

21-24^th October 2010

There will be an Information Evening on Wednesday 8^th September 2010 at 6.30pm in the main school hall. If you haven’t returned your medical/contact information forms and £15 airport transfers fees then please send them in before or bring them along to the meeting.

Holland Trip

The trip information evening for parents and students will be held next term on 14^th September at 7pm in the Main Hall.

Parents must bring their son’s EHIC card, photocopy of his passport and passport sized up to date photo of him

Cashless meals

We are pleased to announce that, following the successful award of a government grant, we are installing a new cashless catering system from Cunninghams as part of the refurbishment of the canteen that is taking place over the summer holidays.

We are sure that parents and students will appreciate the advantages of the new system enabling us to deliver a more efficient, faster service and to continue to provide wholesome, healthy, and enjoyable meals at the lowest cost.

Fathers book club

Fathers & non-fathers welcome!

The next meeting of the Fathers’ Book Club will be at 7pm in LO8 of The Clarendon Muse on Tuesday 7^th September when we will be discussing The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.

The Open Morning offers a good opportunity to find out about our excellent school and its special ethos. During the morning you will have the chance to have a guided tour of the School and meet our students; visit the academic, sports, music and arts departments and talk to the teachers; enjoy refreshments in the School Canteen and hear the Headmaster speak.

Please note, application packs for admission in September 2011 will not be available before the Open Morning.

100 Year Project
Help us celebrate the School's Centenary in 2012 by contacting us now!

The 100 Year Project has been established to help us record the names and contact details of all boys who have passed through the School doors since 1912, the year the current building was first opened.
Our aim is to reach out to all Old Boys, help you get in touch with each other and give you the chance to revisit your old school and help us celebrate this significant milestone in 2012. A full programme of centenary celebrations will be posted on this website soon.

Boys are admitted to the School at Year 7 and the Sixth Form (Year 12). Very occasionally, casual vacancies may appear for September in Years 8, 9 and 10. Applications for these years should be made in writing to the Headmaster as soon as possible.

Parents interested in their son applying for a place should, in the first instance, browse through this website for more information and visit the School during one of its open days which are advertised on this website.

Year 7 admissions
The Governing Bodies of the two schools have determined the following admissions criteria for entry into Year 7 in September 2010. In the event of over subscription, these criteria will apply in allocating places at each school.

COMMUNITY PLACES

Looked After Children.
Applicants whose permanent home address is nearest to the school to which they have applied (18 places, 10% of the total admissions).
Applicants with a sister / brother enrolled at the school to which they have applied, excluding sisters / brothers who first entered the school in the Sixth Form (Year 12 or Year 13).
Places will then be allocated to applicants living closest to the school.

SPECIALIST PLACES

5. Applicants selected on the basis of aptitude for music as measured by the school's assessment procedures (18 places, 10% of total admissions).

6. Applicants selected by academic ability as measured by the school’s assessment procedures, in merit order (45 places, 25% of total admissions)
