"No art form is more truly collaborative and creative than drama. Providing the right environment for drama to flourish and grow does not only ensure we nurture young theatrical talent it will also deliver young people that can communicate, persuade, empathise, be confident and creative. That is why I fully support the School's plans to redevelop the James Theatre and create a hub for theatrical activity in the area."
Nicholas Hytner

Drama at Watford Grammar School for Boys has never been more popular and the James Theatre has provided an inspiring backdrop for over 20 years to a myriad of productions from The Taming of the Shrew, Amadeus and Uncle Vanya to Midsummer Night’s Dream, Grease and The Rocky Horror Show. Over the last few years we have broadened the use of the theatre to include home-produced talent shows, dance, rock concerts, and even a yearly Murder Mystery, ably performed by members of staff!
Built in 1972, the James Theatre has served our needs well, however changes to the drama curricula at both GCSE and A level and the popularity of drama at all levels has resulted in huge demand for a performance space with more capacity, advanced production capability and the ability to accommodate audiences of over 400.
Our plans include:
• Extending seating capacity by adding a balcony level
• Refurbishing the interior
• Improving the technical capability
• Improving backstage provision
A total of £1.5m is required to create a theatre that will benefit both professional and amateur performers within the Watford area.
