Trip to Goethe Institut -11/01/2024
Student report by Amar B Year 8

The day started off with us meeting in the main hall. We had to catch the train just after 8:30, so we set off for Watford Station just after 8:15. Once we got on the train, we made a few changes on our 90(ish) minute journey and finally reached South Kensington, where we walked for 5 mins until we reached the Goethe Institut.

Once we arrived there, we were welcomed In and brought to a small theatre. We then had a short talk about the Goethe Institut, before completing a quiz about Germany. Since It is a German facility, we were mostly spoken to In German. 3 teams won the quiz including mine!

After, we went up to a classroom, where we learnt about Graffiti - especially In Berlin. We learnt the German vocabulary involved and then completed a worksheet about it. This activity was very fun, especially because we could draw out our own Graffiti.

Afterwards, we went up to the library and completed a very enjoyable treasure hunt. We had to go around the library and find these clues that we would enter into an iPad. They recorded the winners online. My group won!

After the Library, we went downstairs and headed over to Hyde Park, where we would eat our lunch. We sat by the Prince Albert monument. If you wanted to, you could head over to a small Cafe, where you could buy a drink. We were in the park for about 40 mins, before we had to head back to the Goethe Institut.

Once we walked back, we went back into the Theatre and watched a movie. The movie was called ‘When Hitler stole the Pink Rabbit’ and lasted just under 20 minutes. The movie was very interesting and was about a family who had to leave Germany after the 1933 elections. (when the Nazi Party was voted in).

After the film, the winners were given their prizes. The prizes include: a notebook, sweets, a pen, a yo-yo and a few other things. We then all got a badge. The badges were all written in German and had random things written on them. We then said bye to the nice staff at the Goethe Institut and headed off to South Kensington station. We then got the train home - the same way we came. Some people were allowed to get off at the stations that they live at. We eventually arrived at Watford around 5pm.

Student Report by Jacob H in Year 8  - A trip the Goethe Institut

The day started with getting the Metropolitan line to Finchley Road, then changing to the Jubilee line until Westminster before changing to the District line to South Kensington. Upon arrival at the station we walked up exhibition road and to the institute.

Once at the institute, we were greeted with an opening slideshow presentation in the theatre about the Goethe institute and then a quiz on Germany. We then went upstairs into a classroom and we learnt vocabulary to do with graffiti and what people think of it in modern-day Germany. After that, we were taken to the German library on the floor below and took part in a treasure hunt.

For lunch, we walked for 5 minutes, down to Hyde Park, where we ate lunch by the Albert Memorial. After walking back to the institute at 1:00, we were seated in the theatre once again, to watch ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’ - a film entirely in german.

Finally at 15:30, we walked back to South Kensington station, and took the train back to school.

Personally, I found this trip interesting and fun as we spent most of our day only speaking german. I’d like to thank Mrs Foord, Mrs Hensman and Malte for organising and giving us this great opportunity.
