Opportunities, Adventure & Challenge

For us an excellent education is about much more than academic success. Our aim is to continue to develop fully rounded young men by providing them the very best facilities and opportunities. We offer a wide range of activities and societies in which students are actively encouraged to participate. Many of these societies and activities are held jointly with Watford Grammar School for Girls and many are organized by the pupils themselves.
Music  A wide range of instrumental lessons are available as well as an annual programme of performances by the School's 15 musical groups and choirs. Each year pupils participate in the Annual School Music Competition. More recently students have also made use of the Schools brandnew Recording Studio to learn music production techniques.

Expression  Productions take place in the James Theatre and in the adjoining Drama studio. The School has three major productions per year, with other studio events directed by students. Technical expertise are provided by teams of students and staff.
Sport  Major sports are Rugby, Hockey and Cricket, along with Cross Country, Athletics and Tennis. An ambitious programme of fixtures in these sports against the strongest school teamsare organized annually. The School’s excellent sporting facilities provide ample opportunity for a variety of sporting and fitness activities. We offer coaching in Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Judo and Fencing. Student volunteers also take part in the annual Community Sports Citizenship Programme in conjunction with Watford Mencap. Developed in 2005 the Community Sports and Citizenship initiative provides a structured programme of physical and creative activities for up to 40 young people with learning disabilities each year. For our pupils the Programme offers the opportunity to develop good citizenship skills and encourage individual achievement through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme by working with Mencap as volunteers

Business Links  The School has a flourishing and expanding programme of business links. These links help students to learn valuable business skills and provide opportunities for them to bring their academic skills to bear on the business world. Business Days are organised particularly in Year 9, with the involvement of a number of local businesses.

In the Sixth Form the Young Engineers have been very successful in problem-solving activities in association with local companies. Indeed, they have won national competitions.
