Rugby 2025

It has been a busy and spirited term of rugby across the school, with teams showing determination, skill and resilience. Senior sides produced several strong performances: the 1XV recording two notably impressive victories (33-27 against a previously unbeaten Hitchin and 38–21 against UCS), with standout performances from Thilan R, Riley T and Vincent
B.

The 2XV enjoyed a perfect run, securing four excellent wins in a row, including a dramatic late 21–15 victory against UCS sparked by Gabriel B’s match-winning moment in the last minute of the game.

In the juniors, results were mixed but full of effort. The U15A recorded two solid and notable wins against QE and St George’s, the U14s and U13s both beat touring side St Thomas’ Ripley with Khalid D scoring in the last play of the game to win it and the U13B went the season unbeaten!

The U12A celebrated impressive results in what is only the beginning of their season and Rugby careers at WBGS. Special praise goes to those Year 7s, who played their first ever fixtures with maturity and enthusiasm.

Although the U14, U15 and U16 squads exited the national cup, their performances - especially the U16s against Verulam and eventual winners Berkhamsted - showed great promise.

Finally, the Year 7 interhouse tournament was a major highlight, with Cassio crowned champions. Edward B earned Player of the Tournament, while Lorenzo C received the Finisher Award, presented by Old Boy and Saracens/England winger Tobias Elliott. Well done to every single one of you who represented the school this year in Green and Black, your commitment and hard work has been a pleasure to watch.

Thanks must also go to all staff who gave up their afternoons and weekends to help facilitate this great tradition of extra-curricular rugby at WBGS.

Our rugby supper, which was celebrated on Wednesday evening, had over 200 parents and pupils, which was our biggest ever turnout. I must congratulate all of the boys who have been in a school team this term, but in particular those boys who received a player of the season award, or most improved player award.

Sports Colours

Junior Sports Colours were handed out to our Year 9 pupils earlier this term and these were awarded to our outstanding sportsmen for their services to school sport in Year 7 and 8, where they needed to participate at A-Team level across three sports. Not an easy feat.

In Year 11, Colts Sports Colour Ties were awarded to those boys that represented two A-Teams, across 75% of fixtures.

Congratulations to those boys who received their colours earlier this term.

INDOOR HOCKEY

Our Senior Boys competed really well at the County Champions.
U16s finished 5th - however all of their games were very close losing out to the winners Bishops Stortford by 1 goal.

U18s finished runners up, losing out 5-3 to Haileybury who went on to win the regionals to be national finalists so very good showing by our lads!
